TYPES OF MASSAGE

TRADITIONAL

DEEP TISSUE
Deep Tissue massage is characterized by a vigorous and deep stroking of muscle. The therapist works primarily with long strokes known as effleurage, along with some rolling and kneading techniques to increase venous and lymphatic circulation and induce deep relaxation.

SWEDISH THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE
Swedish massage nourishes your body by increasing blood flow to the cells. It can involve the use of hands, forearms or elbows to manipulate the superficial layers of the muscle leading to improved mental and physical health and deep relaxation.

THERAPEUTIC
Therapeutic massage is a therapy that can relieve pain and , in combination with other appropriate health care measures, can help heal certain conditions and prevent their return. In some cases therapeautic massage can reduce or even eliminate the need for medication or surgery.

SPECIALIZED

ACCUPRESSURE
Accupressure is an ancient Chinese technique based on the principles of acupuncture, and involves the use of finger pressure (without the needles) on specific points along the body. It is a way of assessing and releasing blocked or congested energy centers in the body. Accupressure massage therapy stimulates and activates the body’s own energies to help fight illness and restore harmony. Some of the accupressure points are significant as they relate to a specific part of the body while others are more general in their effect.

The purpose of acupressure is to stimulate the body’s own recuperative powers by stimulating the various points on the body. The stimulation removes energy blockages by diffusing the toxic build-up that accumulates in the muscle tissue. The accumulation of toxins causes stiffness throughout the body. Stiffness in muscle puts abnormal pressure on nerves, and blood and lymph vessels. The pressure on blood and lymph vessels affect both skeletal systems and internal organ functioning.

AMMA MASSAGE
Amma is the traditional Japanese massage form that is based on the traditional Chinese medicine principles. A westernized version (post WW2) of Amma is known as shiatsu massage. Amma is a relaxation massage and that is the primary intention of the massage. Amma involves applying pressure directly on acupressure points and along energy meridians of the body. The massage takes an hour to perform. The recipient remains clothed and covered with a sheet. The only skin contact is face and hands. Feedback on the amount of pressure is very important so speak up during the massage.

AROMATHERAPY
Aromatherapy massage is a light massage with strong therapeutic value. It combines the nurturing and relaxing powers of touch with the powerful sense of smell.

CRANIAL SACRAL
The brain and spinal chord are bathed in a fluid that has it’s own pump. This pumping action creates a cranial sacral rhythm. If there has been trauma resulting in scar tissue within the cranial-sacral spaces, it will be reflected in the character of the cranial-sacral rhythm. Cranial-sacral therapy offers an extensive approach to healing at a subtle level, not more than the weight of a nickel. The objective of this hands-on pressure is to bring the cranial-sacral rhythm to a stillpoint. This allows the body’s own healing ability to override the stillpoint to create healing. Cranial-sacral therapy provides healing at both a physical and emotional level.

HEALING TOUCH
Healing Touch is a holistic therapy that emphasizes compassionate, heart-centered care in which the healing touch provider and client are equal partners in facilitating health and healing. Healing touch providers use gentle, non-invasive touch to influence and support the human energy system within and surrounding the body. The goal of Healing Touch is to restore harmony, energy and balance within body. This goal supports the client’s self –healing process of becoming whole in body, mind, emotion and spirit. Healing Touch complements conventional health care and is also used in collaboration with other approaches to health and healing.

INFANT
Infant massage is a holistic and natural way to promote infant health, improve parenting skills, and deepen bonding. Infant massage incorporates nurturing touch, massage and reflexology in a loving, fun, one-on-one interaction that offers nourishment for baby’s healthy development of mind, body and spirit.

LOMILOMI
Lomilomi Massage is Hawaiian Massage that incorporates the steam room, hot water and two massage therapists working as one with the body. Deep nourishing oils are applied to the body to help release toxins, release muscle tightness and encourage deep relaxation. Hawaiian Lomilomi massage also includes the application of a gentle exfoliant or polish to removed dead skin cells allowing the skin to more readily accept moisturizers, nutrients and treatments designed to improved the skin texture and the inner skin function. All-natural sea salt and earth clay are used.

LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
Lymphatic Drainage is a massage that works the lymphatic system to detoxify, rejuvenate and strengthen your natural defenses throughout your immune system.

MASSAGE CUPPING
Massage Cupping is an exciting adaptation of the ancient art of cupping therapy.  Cupping is a subtle, yet powerful addition to any healthcare practice and complements many healing modalities.  This technique is also easily used at home for treating many common conditions. Through several thousand years of clinical experience, the therapeutic applications of cupping have been documented.  By creating suction and negative pressure, cupping is used to :

  • Drain excess fluids and toxins

  • loosed adhesions and lift connective tissue

  • bring blood flow to stagnant skin and muscles

  • stimulate the peripheral nervous system

MASSAGE FOR FIBROMYALGIA
Fibromyalgia translates as fiber or fibrous (“fibro”), muscle (“myo”), and pain (“algia”). It is defined as widespread pain throughout the body for at least three months, and pain upon pressure in 11 or more of 18 specific tender points. You can experience a break in the pain when massage stimulates the release of endorphins, your body’s natural pain killers, which can alleviate depression and insomnia as well. In addition, massage increases circulation, which cleanses tissue of uncomfortable fluid buildup and irritating by-products of inflammation. As increased oxygen and nutrition flow to contracted muscles, your muscles can relax, headaches may be eased, and the severity and frequency of flare-ups may be reduced.

MASSAGE WITH FACIAL MASK
Our facial mask is a spa-quality mask used for deep cleansing and refining of the skin’s surface. The Harmony Farm facial uses a combination of green French clay, peppermint leaves, calendula flower, comfrey, rosemary, horsetail and sage leaves, chamomile flower and a variety of essential oils. These ingredients give your skin a refreshed and revitalized look and feel. This unique facial treatment combined with a full-body massage is truly a delightful experience.

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE
Is a highly specialized stretching technique used by trained therapists to treat patients with a variety of soft tissue problems. Fascia is a thin tissue that covers all the organs of the body. This tissue covers every muscle and every fiber within each muscle. All muscle stretching is actually stretching of the fascia and the muscle, the myofascial unit. When muscle fibers are injured , the fibers and the fascia which surrounds it become short and tight. This uneven stress can be transmitted through the fascia to other parts of the body, causing pain and a variety of other symptoms in areas you often would not expect. Myofascial release treats these symptoms by releasing the uneven tightness in injured fascia.

NEUROMUSCULAR
Neuromuscular Therapy is a very specialized form of manual therapy. The therapist is trained in the physiology of the nervous system and its effect on the muscular and skeletal systems. The neuromuscular therapist also is educated in kinesiology and biomechanics and how to work in a therapeutic environment. Neuromuscular Therapy is the use of static pressure on specific myofascia to relieve pain. This technique manipulates the soft tissue of the body to the central nervous system.

PREGNANCY
During pregnancy, massage is a wonderful way to relax, increase your energy, and relieve discomfort as your body adapts to the new life growing within you. Pregnancy massage can also help to:

  • Relieve pain in the muscles and joints that must support added and redistributed weight.

  • Increase flexibility, making it easier for your body to adjust to a changing shape.

  • Ease constipation, gas and heartburn as general relaxation stimulates intestinal movement.

  • Reduce excess fluid retention by gently pushing fluid into circulation where it can be eliminated

  • Slow the progress of varicose veins as enhanced circulation lowers pressure on bulging veins.

  • Relieve headaches caused by tension, constipation, or build-up of waste products.

You will be comfortably supported with pillows or body cushions during your massage. In later pregnancy you can experience a complete massage comfortably supported in a side-lying position.

RAIN DROP THERAPY
The Raindrop therapy is a method of using Vita Flex, reflexology, massage techniques and essential oils applied on various locations of the body to bring it into structural and electrical alignment. It has typically been used to help straighten spinal curvatures and to fight against viruses. It has been discovered that many viruses lie dormant along the spine, including the virus that causes scoliosis. Raindrop therapy is a simple application of dropping the oils like little drops of rain from about six inches above the body. It is a mild and non-intrusive application of a combination of several techniques that have been proved to be effective in bringing balance to the body and helping to align the energy centers of the body and release them if blocked. Raindrop therapy is a powerful tool to use to help restore a balance of good health to the body. The Raindrop therapy application is very often used as a foundation to set the stage for a number of therapeutic applications: for example a full body massage.

REFLEXOLOGY
Reflexology is the ancient practice of using pressure points on the feet and hands to heal and revitalize the entire body. This powerful therapy balances the body’s energy flow, aiding in circulation and body detoxification. It also assists immune, muscular and nerve functions to reduce stress and calm emotions

REIKI
The knowledge that an unseen energy flows through all living things has been part of the wisdom of many cultures since ancient times. The existence of this “life energy force” has been verified by recent scientific experiments, and medical doctors are considering the role it plays in the functioning of the immune system and the healing process.

Reiki is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that allows everyone to tap into an unlimited supply of “life energy force” to improve health and enhance the quality of life. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit and creates many beneficial effects including relaxation and feelings of peace, security, and well-being. Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use.

RHYTHMICAL MASSAGE
Rhythmical Massage (also known as anthroposophical massage) is ideal for cancer patients. The stokes are extremely light, upward, away from the body. There is a sense of suction when the massage therapist’s hand leaves the body. The body is draped with care and only the body part being massaged is exposed. After 20-30 minutes, you are cocooned in warm blankets and encouraged to sleep for 20-30 minutes. This massage treatment is a soothing, loving experience. The overall consideration is to keep the body warm because cancer cells do not like warmth. Harmony Farm is privileged to offer rhythmical massage one day each week by Joyce Morrissey, LMT.

SPORTS
An athlete’s performance is regulated by the efficiency, precision, and freedom with which the athlete is able to move. Efficiency is dependent on training and conditioning. Sports massage allows for more intense training. Restrictions from pain, spasms, and tension inhibit freedom of movement. Without freedom of movement, precision is adversely affected. Sports massage reduces many of the restrictions.

LASTONE THERAPY
Stone Therapy massage uses heated river stones and frozen marble rocks that provide isolated deep heat/cold at strategic points on the spine, back, hands and feet. Muscles relax with the combination of deep heat and cold and the pressure of the massage strokes.

WATSU
Watsu (water-shiatsu) is a form of aquatic bodywork. It involves stretching and Zen Shiatsu applied while being floated in warm water. The water temperature is typically 95-97* degrees Fahrenheit and is ideal for experiencing relaxation. Gentle stretching increases flexibility and strengthens muscles. The support of the water takes weight off the vertebrae and allows the spine to be moved in ways impossible on land. Gentle, gradual twists and pulls relieve the pressure a rigid spine places on nerves and helps undo any dysfunction this pressure causes to organs serviced by those nerves.
